Day 86: Fenders 31Jan2012

Fenders by the side of a pre-fab building. A scratched film texture I found is the overlay.

I am also happy for this month to be over, photo-a-day wise anyway.  I am so ready to have my choice of lenses back!

Day 85: Vase 30Jan2012

This is the vase my mom and grandmother got me for one of my bridal showers.  It came with the note that it nicely fits two dozen roses (it does!).

The swirls are a texture (actually, the picture of food dye dispersing in water that I took earlier) that I set to overlay.

Day 84: GAC 29Jan2012

The roof of the Gunnison Arts Center.  I'm happy that there is a decent arts scene in town.

Day 83: House 28Jan2012

It was kind of a quick photo day today, nothing really all that great. Here is the inside of a house through its window that I thought was at least interesting, albeit blurry.

Day 81: Camera + TV = Happy Photographer 26Jan2012

OK, so this isn't exactly the best of photographs (my lens is long and my video chord is short), but I was really excited to figure out how to hook my DSLR to my television so I could see my photographs on the screen after I take them.  This isn't usually a handy thing unless you are taking self-portraits, which I plan to do next month since it is the month of my birthday.  It makes it much easier to monitor your work that way and prevents a lot of unnecessary picture taking/running around to fix the camera.

My husband also got me a wireless remote shutter that has a two second delay option a few Christmases ago, so I will be all set for self-portrait month!

Day 79: Deer 24Jan2012

Went for a drive towards Crested Butte today and I noticed some deer laying in a field.  Wicked sweet.  And yes, I still live here.

Day 77: Chuck Norris Approved 22Jan2012

My laundry detergent is awesome.

Day 76: Downtown Gunnison 21Jan2012

Kris, T and I went downtown to look for a new winter coat for my ever-increasing belly.  Maternity coats heavy enough to fair Gunnison's infamously cold winters are scarce, but luckily in this ski town we were able to find a men's coat that will do and be a good coat for my husband when I'm not pregnant.  Here is the street where the store was at with a fresh layer of snow.

Day 72: Coors Pitcher 17Jan2012

Kris's Coors pitcher he got from his dad, by the kitchen window.  I was originally focusing on how the curvature of the glass warps the lines of the blinds behind it, like the carafe picture, but I like how the texture of the glass comes through in this image.

Day 71: Snow! 16Jan2012

We got a few inches today.  Here are those foothills again, this time with a dusting of snow.

Day 70: Rec Center 15Jan2012

This is the ceiling of the pools (one lap and one leisure) at the community rec center in town through the outside window.  Definitely have been and will be spending a lot of time there.

Day 69: Telephone Pole 14Jan2012

Telephone pole on my walk around Gunnison today.  It's weird seeing them after living in Fort Collins where most of the lines are underground.

I used a reflected gradient layer in Photoshop to achieve the coloring you see here.  Icon_tutorial over at LJ has been most helpful for learning new PS editing tricks even though I have no interest in making icons.

Day 68: Gunnison High School 13Jan2012

Happy Friday the 13th!  This is GHS, across the street from where we live.

Day 66: And the hills 11Jan2012

The hills behind the high school.  I really like the texture and the way the light hits the ground.

Day 65: More Mountains 10Jan2012

Ok, I wasn't really that happy with the pictures I took this day.  So I cropped and photoshopped a bit.  Not fauxtographer style though, don't worry!

Day 62: House Hunting 07Jan2012

I love this shot.  Gunnison is a collection of many different styles and conditions of houses, which speaks to me the different levels of prosperity, poverty and purpose in this town.  I'm planning to do a series on all the different houses here, maybe I'll even make it a month theme.

I also had a very fruitful shoot this time out, so it was challenging choosing just one photograph.

This is a particularly dilapidated house on the same block as our town home.

Day 61: Horses 06Jan2012

Horses on a farm west of town.  The sun wasn't particularly in my favor, but I don't mind how this looks.

Also, a little Photoshop trick: duplicate layer and add a Gaussian blur.  Adjust the opacity to the desired amount of glowing effect (a little bit seen here).

Day 60: Free Stuff 05Jan2012

T and I took a walk to Main St today that covered about half the distance across Gunnison (okay, I might be exaggerating, but not by much).  Someone was trying to give away some stuff along our route.

Day 59: Crested Butte 04Jan2012

T conked out in the car yesterday after hours of trying to get her to nap previously, so in order not to disturb her we went on a road trip to Crested Butte, about 30 minutes north of Gunnison.  This is a "foothill" along the way, not Mt. Crested Butte. However, it did surprise me to discover that Mt. Crested Butte looks quite similar to this, given that it is surrounded by many tall, pointy, snow-covered mountains.  The town of Crested Butte itself looks like Hollywood's version of a Colorado ski town, which it pretty much is.

See?  I can do landscapes!

Day 58: Closet Door 03Jan2012

This was the day I went out to get a photo of the mountains I can see from down the street, but my battery died.  Instead, here is our water heater closet door.

Day 57: Scat 02Jan2012

Instead of dog poop, you have to watch your step for deer scat around here.

Day 56: New Year, New Month, New Challenge 01Jan2012

As I mentioned previously, I decided this month to take pictures with my 75-300mm 4-5.6/f telephoto lens since as more of a macro photographer I am not as comfortable using it.  However, I've found it's still pretty easy to do macro photography with it anyway.  I am hoping to be braver and take more landscape photographs as a result, especially given where I'm living now.

Here are my front stairs:

Day 55: 13 31Dec2011

So the number is a little backwards, but T's number puzzle only goes up to 20.

Day 54: Air Freshener 30Dec2011

I know, exciting huh? Actually I was pretty excited to get this air freshener because it smells like spruce and it was on sale. Mmm.

Day 53: Cooler 29Dec2011

Finally in Gunnison, CO.  Here is the side of our smaller cooler.

Monday, January 2, 2012

I'm still here and This month's theme

Even though for the first time ever I have reliable reception from Verizon in a place I live (including 3G!), we've been without the real interwebs since Thursday. Luckily, we will have it on Wednesday. Until then, you'll have to wait to see my pretty pictures.

The theme for this month is the sole use of my telephoto lens since I am least comfortable with it.
